 Steam Systems

Duke Hospital and Duke Clinic receive a priority one status from the steam plant. This ensures that these facilities will receive available steam as long as any of the steam plant's boilers are in operation.

Steam is used for HVAC systems, sterilizers, washers and water heaters Users should read and understand operator’s manuals for each piece of equipment prior to operation.

Only properly trained personnel should service or make repairs to equipment, steam, and condensate systems.

Hazards include but not limited to; un-insulated steam and condensate piping, steam and condensate leaks which can lead to severe burns.

Report any banging noises or leaks coming from the steam or condensate system immediately.

For steam emergencies, assistance or service for steam-related equipment and systems, call MC Engineering & Operations, 919-684-3232.

The steam system is periodically shut down to perform preventive maintenance to the supply system. Equipment and safety devices are inspected routinely as part of the preventive maintenance program.
